A bird foraging in a grassy area: What could it be? With only those words, a bird could be almost anything, but the bird’s size relative to the grass blades rules out anything at all that we might consider to be a large bird. That interesting and intricate back pattern provides one of the very few other clues that might allow us to ID this bird to species. Those paler longitudinal streaks—termed “braces” by British birders (“suspenders” in American English)—recall the back pattern of many grassland sparrow species. Is that where we should look for a solution?
