Another raptory-hawky thing is this month’s quiz subject, and I know that everyone is excited about that! The wings are certainly obviously long, so ruling out vultures, eagles, long-winged buteos (such as Swainson’s and Ferruginous), and probably even harriers. Unfortunately, the quiz bird is streaked below, a feature not at all rare in raptory-hawky things, and the remiges (primaries and secondaries) are checkered with dark bits, also not at all rare in raptory-hawky things. Despite these features being widespread in those avian species with nasty, sharp talons, the quiz bird is showing more than enough features to identify it to species.
