Answer to Previous: Harris's Hawk
This next one is a little more complicated, so be sure to explain your process of identification, even if you think it's obvious. Good practice for those who have trouble with…….er…whatever those brown birds are 😉
Ready, set…identify!
It is either a Lincoln’s Sparrow or a Song Sparrow, most likely the Lincoln’s Sparrow.
I’d go with Lincoln’s based on the length of tail and lack of “redness” in it. Also, I see a hint of fine streaking on the sides of the second bird, which aren’t blotchy enough for song.
Agreed, Lincoln’s. The slight buffy wash as opposed to whitish and also something about the contrast between the gray color of the head and the brown on the head reminds me of lincoln’s rather than Song (probably just me)
Yes, I agree after consulting some other guides I confirmed it to be a Lincoln’s Sparrow not a Song Sparrow.
I would call the left a song sparrow and the right a lincoln’s.
…based on all the typical Lincoln’s field marks- buffy, gray-green flanks with fine and well-defined black streaking, greenish mantle with clean, fine streaking, the finely streaked crown, and broad gray supercilium. The left bird is, overall, more of a reddish brown with smudgier streaking, lighter flanks (that do not contrast with the belly color) and a very short primary projection…which I think may be a relatively consistent distinguishing factor as well…but maybe not.
Right bird Lincoln’s for sure. Nice, buffy flanks are striking. Left bird not quite sure.
The left bird could be a Song Sparrow, eastern variant. But the primaries and secondaries don’t have very much orange-red color in them. It does have course streaking on the back though, so I’m going with Song Sparrow on the left and Lincoln’s on the right.
Lincoln’s Sparrows, the bird on the left does bear a resemblance to a Song Sparrow but it has an eye ring and its bill is too dark for a Song Sparrow.
Bird on the left is definitely a Song, and the right is definitely a Lincoln’s, for all of the reasons AJ pointed out. The left bird is overall “bulkier”, and more gray than green, as in the LISP. Also, on the lefthand side of the left bird, you can see a corner of the flanks, which is a light creme with brown streaks, not the green-gray with blacker streaks that would be expected on a LISP. Just my thoughts…
