Join The Nature Conservancy at Willow Creek Preserve to bird for the City Nature Challenge.

Willow Creek’s native grasslands, ash woodlands and perennial streams provide the best remaining example of native wet prairie habitats in the southern Willamette Valley.  This habitat provides important habitat for migratory birds. This tour will be led by Sophie Linden, TNC’s newest Willamette Basin Steward based in Eugene, and Charlie Quinn, who initiated bird surveys at Willow Creek over 20 years ago and is currently with McKenzie River Trust. On this walk we will be engaging in bird watching and a BioBlitz for The City Nature Challenge. The City Nature Challenge is an exhilarating community-science event aimed at observing and documenting as much plant and wildlife diversity as possible over a 4-day period. Originally hosted by the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County in 2016 as a friendly competition between Los Angeles and San Francisco, the challenge has since grown exponentially, with more communities joining every year. In 2023, over 66,000 individuals participated in 482 cities across 46 countries, both as groups and individuals, using the iNaturalist app, a free tool available on both Apple and Android devices. You can also use a digital camera to capture observations for uploading to the website.

The primary goals of the City Nature Challenge are to:

  • Foster connections between urban/metropolitan populations and their local natural environments.
  • Facilitate connections among participants, both in-person and online, to build a sense of community around local nature.
  • Collect valuable urban biodiversity data for scientific research, management, and conservation efforts.
  • Expand the global network of volunteer biodiversity documenters.
  • Provide an enjoyable experience through friendly competition!

During our event, we’ll utilize the user-friendly iNaturalist app to photograph and identify the birds we encounter. We’ll begin with a brief training session before exploring Willow Creek Preserve and its surrounding trails.

Please remember to bring:
