Carl Bendorf encountered his spark bird at age 12 when he rigged a toy parabolic reflector to a small reel-to-reel tape recorder and recorded an Eastern Bluebird near his home in small-town Iowa. Now retired from a career in non-profit management and development, Carl is past president of the Iowa Ornithologists’ Union and former member of the records committee. In 2011, Carl founded Iowa Young Birders and serves as a member of the board. He and his wife, Linda, now live in Longmont, Colorado and in 2016 Carl started Colorado Birding Adventures.
An ABA member for 35 years, Carl was first elected to the ABA Board of Directors in 2011 and re-elected in 2014; he currently serves as vice-chair and also chairs the Membership/Development Committee.
