New birds, new friends, new experiences

Each year the American Birding Association and its partners offer some fantastic events for young birders, enabling them to get out, discover more about birds, and go birding with others in their age group. Attending workshops, conferences, camps, and conventions gives these young people a unique opportunity to experience birding, learn about bird ecology and identification, and just have fun with their peers.

The ABA would like to thank Rockjumper Worldwide Birding Adventures,
lead
sponsor of the ABA Young Birder Camps!

Dear Campers, Parents, and Guardians,

After much discussion and consideration, we have reached the difficult decision that we must again postpone our ABA young birder summer programs, Camp Colorado and Camp Avocet, until the summer of 2022.

We are grateful for the growing availability of the COVID-19 vaccine and recognize that things are starting to open back up. In spite of this, the logistics of safely bringing together a sizable group of campers and staff from all around the continent are simply untenable. The structure of our program, from the dorm rooms where we stay to the number of people in vans, make it impossible for us to follow the recommended health and safety guidelines for the operation of residential summer camps during the pandemic. Safety is always our paramount concern and, in this case, we don’t feel the risks are acceptable. We trust that you understand.

We want you to know that we are disappointed, too. We really wanted to be back in the field with us this summer, but will look forward to being together again in 2022. If you registered for camp in 2020 and let your deposit transfer over, we very much hope you will let your deposit transfer over again to 2022. For those registered for Camp Colorado, we will not increase your 2022 price if you transfer your deposit even though the 2022 camp includes an extra day. If you have any questions, please email Kelly Smith ([email protected]).

If you received a scholarship from a source outside of the ABA, we are working with donors to transfer the funds over to 2022 so you will not have to reapply next year. If you applied for a scholarship from the ABA you will not have to reapply either; we will be in touch with more information about that.

We are discussing possibilities for doing some shorter family programs this summer that would allow for social distancing; we’ll let you know as soon as we have a plan.

Again, we are very disappointed to have to make this decision and we wish you all the best as you bird your way through the summer. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns. We look forward to being together again in 2022.

Yours,

Jeff and Jennie
