Jennie Duberstein volunteers as the ABA’s Young Birder Liaison, directing Camp Colorado and providing overall support to the association’s Young Birder Program. She has worked with young birders through the ABA and other organizations for 29 years, directing summer camps and conferences and connecting young birders with opportunities and with one another. She is also one of the instructors for VENT’s Camp Chiricahua. For her day job, Jennie is a wildlife biologist and conservation social scientist who builds partnerships for bird and habitat conservation across the U.S. and northwestern Mexico. She currently directs the Sonoran Joint Venture, bringing people together to do good things for birds and habitat in the southwestern U.S. and northwestern Mexico. Jennie lives in Tucson, Arizona, where she spends her free time running long distances on the trails in the Sky Islands, reading, and playing folk music.

Michael L. P. Retter is Editor of North American Birds, Special Issues Editor of Birding, and past Editor of Birder’s Guide—all magazines produced and published by the ABA. He came up through the ABA’s youth birding program in the 1990s and now helps at its youth birding camps when he can. Michael is author of the ABA Field Guide to Birds of Illinois and the forthcoming Princeton University Press Photographic Guide to Birds of Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize. He is passionate about making birding welcoming for all, and in that vein, he helps to run QBNA, North America’s informal club for LGBTQ+ birders and their allies. A serious gardener, Michael splits his time between homes in Fort Worth, Texas, and Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Bill Schmoker is a lifelong student of the natural world who took a more serious turn towards bird photography with his first digital camera in 2001. His photos have appeared in international nature publications, books, newspapers, interpretive signs, web pages, advertisements, corporate logos, and as references for art works.  Also a published writer, Bill wrote a chapter for Good Birders Don’t Wear White, is a past Colorado/Wyoming regional editor for North American Birds and former eBird Reviewer. He is also a past president of Colorado Field Ornithologists and has represented Leica and Nikon on their birding pro teams.  Bill is especially fond of his involvement with the ABA’s Young Birder Programs, long serving as a Photography Module judge in the Young Birder of the Year contest and as an instructor at Camps Colorado and Delaware Bay enough times to run out of fingers and toes to count them on. Bill is a popular birding guide, speaker, and workshop instructor, and recently retired from a 31-year career teaching middle school science in Boulder, Colorado.

Hannes Leonard has been a birder since age 10. Ever since attending Camp Colorado in 2018, he has been involved with ABA young birder programs in one way or another. With the ABA, he has served as editor for the ABA’s young birder magazine, The Fledgling, captained the ABA World Series of Birding big day team, and guided trips at ABA Community Weekends, birding festivals, and Camp Surfbird. Hannes lives in St. Petersburg, Florida, where he is a biology student at the University of South Florida as well as a member of the USF Co-ed Sailing Team.
