On the cover, a charming Cerulean Warbler welcomes you to the June issue. Can you tell its age & sex? I certainly couldn’t, but photographer Gene Koziara can. Thankfully, he is here to share the expert knowledge he’s gleaned through years of careful observation.
Every year, birds migrate across valleys, mountain ranges, deserts, unimaginable expanses, and national borders, as do birders and the friendships and relationships we make through birding. In this issue, we celebrate those international relationships, migrations, and conservation efforts.
- Editor Frank Izaguirre speaks to border-spanning friendships in his Spectacles column.
- Peter Kaestner, who became the first person in the world to see 10,000 species of birds in 2024, meditates on how global birding and our understanding of which species are in or out of reach has changed in the last 50 years.
- Jean Iron shares the history of the Toronto Whimbrel Watch, the research that has been achieved by tracking Whimbrels on their migration, and the international collaboration that makes these monitoring efforts so fruitful.
- Jesús Antonio “Chucho” Moo Yam spotlights Ana María Morales Cañizares and her team at the Águilas de los Andes Foundation, who rehabilitate spectacular raptors like the endangered Black-and-chestnut Eagle in Colombia.
Conservation has also been a driving impulse for Pete Marra, who is the subject of the June Birding Interview. In his interview, Pete Marra discusses outdoor cats, population declines in North American birds, migratory bird biology, and the importance of educating the public about science.
In the final feature article, Natasza Fontaine shares how she makes and uses sound recordings, how birding by ear guides her through scenic southern New Mexico, and how to practice identifying birds through sound.
