For more than 40 years, the National Geographic Field Guide has been an essential text in the libraries of U.S. and Canadian birders. The venerable series is in its eighth edition now, published earlier this week; regional volumes, for the Eastern and Western regions of the U.S. and Canada, were published in Feb. 2025. Birding Editor Ted Floyd, a regular on this podcast, wrote the texts for the field guides, but the art in any field guide is of course at least as important as the words. Former ABA Bird of the Year artist Andrew Guttenberg serves as Art Coordinator for this series, and he joins host Nate Swick to talk about the exciting undertaking of creating new field guide art, as well as the all the essential behind-the-scenes work of overseeing art production.
