2009 Team Application
The 2009 ABA/Leica Tropicbirds have been chosen! Please consider applying for our 2010 team.
Calling all dedicated young birders! The American Birding Association is searching once more for teens to comprise our 2009 ABA/Leica Tropicbirds teams! Now is the chance for you to experience the excitement of a national, all-out, bird-or-bust, 24 hour bird-a-thon! We are looking for 8 young birders (14-18 years old) for the ABA/Leica Tropicbirds teams that will be competing in two 2009 events: The Great Texas Birding Classic (May 2) and The World Series of Birding (May 9). Both of these exciting competitions take place in fabulous birding locations at the height of spring migration. Test your skills against some of the best birders in the country, while helping to raise money for the ABA's education programs.
Our generous sponsor, Leica Sport Optics, will pay for the team costs (except for team members' transportation to and from the event sites), and the ABA will arrange for lodging, food, and adult guidance by expert birders during the competition.
In addition to being an excellent birding and learning opportunity, the Tropicbirds competitions are the primary means of fundraising for the ABA's education programs. This fundraiser earns money for young birder educational events, as well as adult education and educational outreach. Tropicbirds team members are expected to raise pledges on their own from family and friends before their events. All team member pledges will go toward Young Birder education including scholarships, conferences, and subsidizing student memberships.
Applicants must fill out the application form, write a short essay about why they would like to be a Tropicbirds team member and how they would contribute to this effort, and have two letters of recommendation. Letters of recommendation should be from people who know your birding abilities and commitment to sharing your passion for birding with others.
