Application for an ABA Scholarship is a rigorous process in which applicants are asked to demonstrate a serious interest in birds and to show why the program they're seeking to attend will benefit their development. Scholarship applicants submit essays detailing the role birding plays in their lives, and they are asked to provide letters of recommendations from adult birders who are familiar with their work and interests.

An ABA Scholarship usually covers only part of the cost of attending an event, as a way of encouraging creative methods of fundraising on the part of applicants, such as seeking sponsors for a Big Day, finding a bird-related job, selling art work, or leading walks. However, exceptions are made in the case of special circumstances.
