Having grown up in the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia, Dean Nicholson always had an interest in nature, but he wasn't infected with the birding bug until he and his wife took their honeymoon in Costa Rica in 1992. Since then birds have taken roost in Dean's imagination, and birding (or thinking about birding) provides a welcome contrast to Dean's regular work as the Administrator of the regional Addictions Counselling Service. Dean has participated in Christmas Bird Counts for many years, and is currently contributing data for the British Columbia Breeding Bird Atlas. In addition to birds, Dean has also developed expertise in the area's butterflies, moths and dragonfly species. Dean lives in Cranbrook, B.C. with his wife and two teenage children, but his mind is often taking flight to all the places in the world where new birds wait to be seen.
