The American Birding Association is pleased to distribute as a downloadable PDF file the "How to organize a birding or nature festival" guide, as part of its support for birding festivals and part of its "birding economics" efforts.
This short, 32-page guide was prepared by Nancy Millar, director of the McAllen, Texas, Visitors and Convention Bureau. Many festivals throughout North America have used previous versions of this guide, customizing as they went, to host successful festivals.
For ABA, birding festivals have a conservation impact because they help create and sustain a local constituency committed to the preservation of bird-related resources. As Nancy Millar herself says, "Anyone who knew the Rio Grande Valley a dozen years ago and knows it today can attest to the vast difference of the awareness in the area of the value of birds, land, and other natural resources." The festivals in The Valley have been central to the shift in awareness.
