Submitting Photographs for Birding

We welcome your interest in Birding, the bimonthly membership magazine of the American Birding Association. Our articles feature bird identification, bird-finding information (foreign and domestic), profiles of rare or local species, bird taxonomy, outstanding birding experiences, quizzes, conservation as it affects birds, birding equipment and techniques, book reviews and other topics of general interest to active birders. Birding's circulation in January 2002 was approximately 22,000 and includes overseas members. Please note ABA's policy regarding our liability for art, which includes transparencies (attached).

Guidelines

Generally we use color photographs; black-and-whites are used on occasion. Images should be sharp, although exceptions can be made for rarely photographed species and plumages, or documenting photos of birds rare to North America. We can accept 35mm or larger transparencies as well as digital images. We can also reproduce from prints but prefer to have the original negative to work with if possible.

Photos are chosen for image sharpness, proper exposure, composition, and uniqueness of plumage or feature being represented in an identification article. For non-ID articles, birds in natural settings are preferred. In-hand photos are acceptable for ID articles.

We maintain files with photographers' telephone numbers and addresses, stock lists, and samples. Once or twice a year a want-list may be sent to selected photographers. For specific requests we will telephone or email. Payment for full-page photos used inside is $80, less than full page in size is $50. Cover images receive $175 to $200. Photographers who have more than 10 photographs in a single article or photo showcase will receive the full amount for the first 10 photographs (including a possible cover related to the article), and 60% payment for any remaining photos in the article. (For example, a photo showcase with 11 regular-sized photos by the same photographer will receive $530, or $500 for the first 10 and $30 for the final photo). Payment and images are returned approximately two weeks after publication. Cover photographers receive three free issues of the magazine; photographers with inside images receive one free issue. Photos used in the Photo Quiz receive one free copy of the issue in which the answers are given.

We endorse the "Principles of Ethical Field Practices" promoted by the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) and encourage our photographers to adopt these standards.

When submitting transparencies, please note the following:

Enclose a complete list of the transparencies being submitted. If you wish the receipt of your submission acknowledged, please enclose a self-addressed, stamped postcard. Photographs will be returned via U.S. certified mail. Birding cannot accept responsibility for images lost or damaged in transit. Although all reasonable care is taken, we cannot accept responsibility for unsolicited transparencies (or manuscripts). ABA does not pay holding fees.

We prefer original transparencies, but will accept duplicates for preliminary review and will call to get an original when needed.

When submitted to us, all 35mm transparencies should be protected in 2 x 2-inch plastic sleeves within plastic sheets. We cannot accept responsibility for any damage to a slide that occurs prior to receipt. Please do not use any staples or paper clips when packing and shipping transparencies.

Clearly mark each slide with your name, address, the species (including both common and Latin name) and indicate if it is a duplicate. Most importantly, date (month and year) and location of photo are also required (or include this information on an attached sheet).

Birding does accept digital photographic submissions. We require a minimum 300 dpi TIFF file at a minimum 8 1/2 X 11 inches in CMYK. We can also accept original RAW files.

Photographers residing outside the United States please note that the postal authorities do not allow certified mail. When insurance is available, the value of the product is not insured, but rather only the cost of the materials or the cost to duplicate the materials is covered, which is minimal. It is, therefore, imperative that photographers protect their interest by making duplicates of their transparencies or prints before submitting them to Birding.

Again, thank you for your interest in Birding and please send all submissions or correspondence to me at the address listed below.

Kind regards,

ABA Policy on Liability for Art

(transparencies, prints, maps, drawings, paintings)

ABA very much appreciates the excellent relationships we enjoy with contributing photographers and artists. We know careful handling of your contributions is essential and we make every effort to see that material submitted for ABA publications is treated with full respect.

We acknowledge liability for transparencies, prints, maps, and other art, while they are in ABA's possession; but, when we return the art and it is received by the post office or other carrier, we lose control over its handling; therefore, our liability during the return shipment is limited. We return art at our expense, by certified mail if we have received it via first class or certified mail, or by registered mail if the art was received by registered mail and by U.S. express mail, if it was received by U.S. express mail; otherwise, we return solicited art however we received it at ABA, via UPS, Federal Express, etc. Should a package be lost during return shipments by U.S. Postal Service, claims will be limited to the cost of materials only. In the case of other returns, compensation will be limited to whatever the carrier pays for lost-item claims.

When we receive art from photographers, transparencies will be examined by the ABA staff and the applicable color-separation house prior to scanning. Any scratches, spots, or other damaged areas will be noted. In the rare case that during the publication process a slide, irreplaceable print, or piece of artwork is damaged so that it is no longer publishable, ABA will replace it with an electronically-created duplicate. If this is not possible, we will negotiate compensation, but in no case will this exceed $1500.

Thank you for your contributions to ABA publications, and may our work together remain smooth sailing.
