Birders' Exchange was founded in 1990 by the Manomet Center for Conservation Science (MCCS). In 1996, MCCS partnered with ABA to run the program, and a productive partnership blossomed, building on the extensive birder network of ABA and the conservation links with Latin America at MCCS. Since late February 2002, the American Birding Association has run the program in its entirety. The ABA has made clear that it will continue to develop and expand the program, based on the vision set forth by the MCCS.
Since its inception Birders' Exchange has several hundreds of conservation and education organizations and individuals in 30 countries and territories.
